Why Quilts Matter DVD Give-Away
EDIT: Carla Langendoen of Cora Quilts was the DVD winner. Hope to see you blog your thoughts about the series, Cora!
When working at the New England Quilt Museum I was fortunate enough to get a peek at a DVD called Why Quilts Matter: History, Art and Politics from Shelly Zegart and the Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc. I loved it. I talked to the TV while I watched it. I wrote a blog entry about it and was later asked to write a guest blog for their website. Before any of that happened I purchased two copies of the DVD so I could own one and donate the other to my local library. I feel that strongly about it, and continue to encourage others to do the same. (BTW, there is no monetary compensation involved here)
A few weeks ago I was contacted by the Why Quilts Matter people (who are kickass fun, BTW) and asked to view one section of the documentary and write some study-group type questions for a new Continuing the Conversation guide to the series. I was delighted to do so, and was sent a copy of the DVD as a "thank you" gift. Since I already have a copy I decided to give away the gift copy. I really don't like the whole blog "give-away" thing, mostly because I never win and really think some of you guys are all up in your head when you require people to jump through hoops and do 94 things in order to qualify. There, I said it. THIS will be a very simple, straightforward give-away.
To enter: Send me a fat quarter of Liberty of London fabric.
HAH! See what I did there? Okay, seriously, go check out their website - you are on your honor. Then, leave a comment with your fantasy quilting or sewing notion. For example: my fantasy sewing notion is a bobbin that works with a spool of thread. You throw a spool on top of the machine, snap a spool in the bobbin case and you sew like a maniac for days - no stopping to reload the )(#&*()@#&$ bobbin. What is your fantasy notion? Maybe some genius out there will create it and we'll all be happy.
In about a week I'll holler downstairs (to my husband), "Pick a number between 1 and ----" and that will be the winner. (I'll have to do it a couple of times because he is deaf as a haddock and I have to repeat everything about three times.) Sigh.
Okay, let's have it - what are your brilliant ideas? PS - the DVD is great for individuals or guilds or groups - lots of topics and good information. (But you knew that from going to their website, right?)

I'm so glad you're not making people jump through hoops to enter your giveaway! I've wanted to get that Why Quilts Matter DVD -- of course, being the first comment likely means there's no chance of winning!
ReplyDeleteMy fantasy sewing notion would be a really fine, really sharp needle for hand piecing -- thinner and sharper than a #12 sharp and one that never lost its coating and the tip never started to get blunt!
Wonderful idea. I have been watching the series on my local PBS station. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised from the get go. I didn't expect that.
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky to have it on a local station; PBS didn't produce the series so it isn't widely available. Isn't it an amazing series? I too was very pleasantly delighted!
ReplyDeleteMy fantasy notion is a pair of glasses that will be able to let me peer into a bag of UFOs and then- BOOM- a lifetime of UFOs are finished. I could sell a million of 'em, easily :)
ReplyDeleteOoooohhh excellent!
ReplyDeleteAnd with an eye that everyone can thread!!!! Hehe!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness.....that's a terrific gift!!!! Can think of so many I would share it with!!! Let's see, a marvelous notion hmmmmmmm---How about a seam ripper that worked with a laser light beam that only targeted the thread needing to be cut (no more "picking", just aim the beam and the thread is cut!).
ReplyDeleteI've heard so much about this DVD series...don't know anyone here in Montana that has seen it...a marvelous notion for me would simply be a hand quilting needle that doesn't bend. I must be stronger than I look!
ReplyDeleteGreat DVD, great question. Fantasy quilt notion would be one that could tie off my thread perfectly and then hide it for me perfectly--both areas in which I struggle. Does something like this exist? Has an engineer already come up with the answer to this quilter's dream?
ReplyDeleteOoh ooh, I've been longing for this DVD set! I love your idea of buying two and donating one to the local library! My dream sewing notion is one of those fancy tables that my machine sits in to. Thank you for the giveaway (I feel the same way about giveaways, by the way. Thank you for saying it!).
ReplyDeleteHi Joan, miss seeing you at the museum. And enjoy the blog - I didn't know you also had a talent for writing. I borrowed, along with others, the DVD from the museum library, so that copy is being used. Thank you. So my fantasy tool would be the eternally sharp rotary cutter blade. I sometimes think I spend more on blades than I do with fabric. Thank goodness for Joann's 40% off coupons
ReplyDeleteHi Polly - miss you, too! My copy went to the Gloucester library in town here; I am a big believer in supporting local libraries. The more people that see it - the better it is for garnering repect for quilting as both craft and art.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to get a look at this so yay for giveaways! I'm with you on the bobbin issue. But not only a huge bobbin but a machine that can hold such a biggie!
ReplyDeleteI need a machine needle that grabs the thread when I lift my presser foot. The darn thread pops out half the time because I love to use my built in snipper. Then I rethread... And curse. Maybe I should just quit using the snipper and flying the presser foot up all in one swoop. I'm always in such a hurry :). Thanks for the amazing giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteA machine needle that grabs my thread when I snip my built in snippers and snap my presser foot up all in one swoop cuz I'm flying along. And then I have to rethread. @&$%#. Thanks for the great giveaway.
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up!~ lol Liberty of London fat quarter.. lol I like your idea about the bobbin!
